cyn.in update number 2 rolled out this morning, with minor bugfixes, and a few small changes in the functioning of the user interface. Presenting... The Preview window! Clicking on a file thumbnail now pops up a preview window. A few discerning users might have already found this window (earlier, it would only appear if the file name was clicked). If the file is an image you can view (and download) the image in its original size and percentage resized sizes as well. The image resizing options allow percentage downsized downloads which can be extremely useful for the digital asset management customers of cyn.in. You can upload your original large creatives and download them resized to your requirements. This functionality is supported by cyn.in's unique dynamic image downsizer feature which allows image downloads at any percentage or resolution scale at high quality. More interface functionality is coming up on this soon, as usual, we'll keep you posted right here. The file preview window also allows you to preview and download attachments of previous versions of the note as well - the cyn.in versioning system automatically creates new revisions for files that are updated. Going back Home In cyn.in the lowest common unit of information is the note. Each note has a page view dedicated to showing note information in full glory - you can see all the SlashTags a note belongs to (bolded) as well as view details (if you're a logged in member of the site) and have further interactions with that note. You can see this view (we call it the Single Note View) every time you create a new note, or when you click the note's title, later. We now provide a link to go back to the home SlashTag from this Single Note View as shown in the picture along side. This will take you back to the Home SlashTag of the Space that this note is on, currently. Edit your Profile When you login to a cyn.in site, you will see a new Edit Profile link next to your name. This link will take you to your profile page. In cyn.in all users have a common profile, that can be edited by clicking on this Edit Profile link. This link would earlier appear only for guest cyn.in users, we've now brought uniformity to the user interface - professional and enterprise site users will also now get this link next to their names. Feedback As always, any kind of feedback is welcome and appreciated. Just post in the support forums (available to all members of both Enterprise and Professional sites).

Our first update has been released!

Date: I bet some of you noticed that we're now showing the date and authors on the note Info bar now - this gives you succinct information about when the note was last updated and who the authors of the note are. You can now go ahead and brag about your new cool looking cyn.in bliki to all your friends. :)

Multiple authors: When a note has more than one author, we show the first names of as many authors we can on the Infobar. Of course, the full names of the authors can be seen by clicking on the Show Info link on the right.

Bugfixes & Enhancements: Under the hood there have been several enhancements and fixes. This includes better error reporting, enhanced single note view (click on the title of a note to see the note in it's full glory), and numerous other small fixes to solve problems that would have manifested themselves over time.

How do you upgrade?
If you're a site owner, all you have to do to upgrade is....... nothing! Your site has been upgraded automatically as part of this cyn.in maintenance release. Upgrades are automatically provisioned to all sites as soon as they are ready. You don't have to do anything - no installations, no configurations, no worries - your site has been automatically updated to the latest release without you lifting a finger. Now is that cool or what? :)

We've noticed that a lot of our site owners that are starting off creating their websites upload their logos. This makes your cyn.in site look exceptionally cool, especially on the Intranet and email notifications.

What we're going to show you today though, is:

How to make a cool looking banner for your cyn.in site
At cyn.in we constantly endeavor to make the user interface easily usable. Our appearance customization system while quite simplistic to use, is quite featureful.

There are customization areas in the top banner, the left sidebar and the footer areas of the Web Space of every cyn.in site. Each area has the full power of a cyn.in note, you can put in any kind of files, pictures, complex HTML markup with tables, css and whatever formatting you need.

For now, let's show you the simple table design of the cyn.in blog's banner and the nice effect it achieves with a tiled image.

To manage the appearance of your cyn.in site, click on the Manage Site link and then on the Appearance tab. Be patient, this page has a lot of rich editing controls, so it may take a while to load.

Let's take a look:

You can  easily customize the displayed areas for your cyn.in site.

The logo appears on your Intranet and on all the RSS feeds that your site can generate.

The banner, sidebar and footer areas can be edited to show up on top, left and bottom areas of your cyn.in site.

The banner area's a great place to show off your creative skills, and sets the feel for the rest of the site.

The sidebar's good for displaying information about you, your site and showing off anything that's applicable site-wide for your web visitors.

All of this is optional of course. For example, we'd rather leave the footer area of the cyn.in blog blank for now, so on the Web Space of blog.cyn.in, you'll notice that nothing appears at the bottom area.

The Banner Area

For now, let's concentrate on the banner area. Let's zoom in a bit:

The blog.cyn.in banner is composed using a standard 5 column HTML table. Don't be perturbed by the way it looks in the rich editor, tables tend to get a bit offset in it, due to extra borders, and the editing controls, the preview button should show you exactly how it will look. The exact HTML source is :

<table style="width: 100%;" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
    <tbody>
         <tr>
              <td><img src="/sites/default/files/images/blog/2008/07/blog-left.gif"></td>
              <td style="width: 50%;" background="/f/410/647/blog_tile_gif.file">
                   &nbsp;
              </td>
              <td>
                   <a href="http://blog.cyn.in">
                   <img src="/sites/default/files/images/blog/2008/07/blog-center.gif" border="0">
                   </a>
              </td>
              <td style="width: 50%;" background="/f/410/647/blog_tile_gif.file">
                   &nbsp;
              </td>
              <td><img src="/sites/default/files/images/blog/2008/07/blog-right.gif"></td>
         </tr>
    </tbody>
</table>

This can be easily generated using the table wizard of the cyn.in rich editor. Alternatively, if you're more comfortable with HTML source, you can create the base HTML in your favorite rich HTML editor and paste the code into the source code editor as well. Images for the banner are uploaded by clicking the "Media" button.

The banner table has 5 columns. The first and the last column are for the curve images to the left and right. The 2nd and 4th columns are tiled to fill up to 50% width each - the background image in these columns is the same and the web browser will stretch this area fluidly, filling it by tiling the background image. The 3rd column in the center contains the center image of the banner and also a link on it so that people can click on it to go to the home page.

That's it, that should get you on your way to creating your own banner for your cyn.in site. Don't have one yet? Get one now, it's free!

Tips:
  1. If you put a link on an image, remember to set the image to have border width of 0 pixels, else you'll see ugly blue borders on it.
  2. Remember to center your banner, even if the banner appears on the center for your screen, some people with high resolution or widescreen monitors could visit your site too!
  3. Your banner can only look as good as the images in it, design your images using a good photo as a base with your favorite image editing tool.
  4. This example is pretty advanced, any image uploaded into the banner area should make your site look quite cool - don't be afraid to experiment!

Post a comment here with the URL of your site and everyone can have a look at it and give you suggestions. :)

Roger Kondrat tries to find the answer in the cyn.in Enterprise Bliki. It feels great when a writer comes along and writes about cyn.in, works in boosting the team morale. Here's an excerpt mentioning cyn.in, the article is worth a read-through as it covers cyn.in in easy to understand tone.

"From what I can see this content management system (now CMS) is pretty amazing, and not only is it feature rich but its being delivered as an SaaS which means no need to hire more techies, software developers, etc."

An extensive and well written overview of cyn.in
