Today a new version of Localscope is available to download from the App Store. The update adds support for the new Sygic GPS v12.x and removes Bing as a source.

Support for Sygic GPS v12.x

Recently, Sygic GPS released a new version of their app v12.x for a few select regions. Along with this new version, they also updated their API and have broken support for the previous API. As a result Localscope was unable to connect with Sygic for navigation. With this version, Localscope has been updated to support the new version of the Sygic app. We will continue to support both versions of their API until the new Sygic v12 is available globally. Fans who have missed using the Localscope - Sygic integration can again start searching for locations within Localscope and navigating to it with Sygic.

Goodbye Bing

Bing has decided to discontinue their Phonebook SourceType API from 1st August 2012. Localscope uses this API to help you find and discover places around your location. Due to their decision, we have been forced to remove Bing from our gamut of services. From this version onwards, Bing will no longer be available as a source in Localscope.  We are sad to so see it go. Bing has been a valuable source of geo information for users in many regions.

As a location browser, we are always on the lookout for great location services to add as sources. If you know of a source with reliable geo information and an API, let us know.

Today, we are happy to introduce you to the shiny new Localscope app icon. The new icon is simplified and is so slick that its lickable :)

Localscope Logo

In the past few years, the red location pointer available in various screens of Localscope has been pointing users worldwide to relevant locations around them. The pointer visually connects information on the user's screen to points in the real world enabling them to locate their desired places and has become one of the most symbolic elements of Localscope. The new app icon is a simplified version of the original Localscope icon that better represents everything Localscope stands for and reflects our continuous focus on simplicty.

Localscope API

Another exciting news with the v2.5 update is the availability of the Localscope API for third party app developers. We believe it is a great opportunity to partner with third party applications and we are eager to integrate their feedback into the API.

Currently the Localscope API is starting off with 2 actions, that applications can use to call Localscope for any location related discovery that their user would like to do:

  • Launch Localscope from a third party application in Search mode with a pre-filled search term
  • Launch Localscope in Discover mode to explore places around a location

Localscope integrates with Launch Center Pro App

The new API comes with support for the popular Launch Center Pro app. Users can easily launch Localscope with pre defined keywords or in discover mode with Launch Center Pro. You can find more detailed information about the API here: http://www.cynapse.com/localscope/api

We have been thrilled by the feedback we have received for Localscope ever since the v2 release. The idea of a Location browser that allows discovery and search of diverse local information and rich media is turning out to be more useful to people than we had imagined. Our users are loving it and the App Store comments are flowing with positive reviews. We want to thank everyone of you who have downloaded Localscope, we couldn't have made it here without you.

We are constantly working to improve your experience of using Localscope and we have some awesome ideas in the works that we believe will set new grounds for location based technology and how it applies to everyday lives of people. We are starting off with a v2.1 update release that adds some new features, improvements and fixes. Here are the highlights of the v2.1 update:

Interactive Full Screen Map View

For every location found within Localscope, a mini map gives users a quick look at the point of interest on the map. Though the mini map gives users an approximate idea of the location, it doesn't provide the pinch, zoom and pan functionality to further dive into the map and see more details. To view the exact location on the map, users had to either switch to the map view (from the list view) or optionally use the navigate button to view it in the Maps app. In 2.1, we are enabling users to view the location on a map by introducing an interactive Full Screen Map view right within Localscope. Tapping on the mini map now, opens up a full screen map view giving the user a quick bird's eyeview of the point of interest and its surroundings. Further, if the user wants to navigate to the location, they can hit the navigate button on the screen and navigate to it using one of the 12 integrated navigation apps.

iOS5 Twitter Integration

Localscope now leverages the iOS5 Twitter integration providing a consistent experience for users to share their location or points of interest via Twitter. If you like a location that you want to share over Twitter, a Tweet sheet will be presented with a default message and a link to the location. You can customize your message and tweet it to your followers. The native app integration offers an easy way to share locations over the traditional app switching mechanism.

v2.1 enables iOS5 Twitter Integration

Improved results from YouTube, Facebook and Picasa

YouTube results now show fresher video content around a location so you can see the most recent video around a location. While the Facebook source has been tweaked to present more relevant results. Picasa source too has some improvements - the detail view of an image now provides relevant information about the image in the more details section.

Introducing Turkish language support

Localscope now speaks Turkish! Our Turkish users can now use Localscope in their native language. With this new addition, Localscope is now available in 20 languages, enabling iOS users worldwide to use Localscope on their devices in their native language.

Fixed Twitter Source

Due to a recent change in their API, the Twitter source was not providing results in Localscope. The new update fixes this issue.

Next version to support iOS 4.3 or higher

This is important for Localscope users using iOS4.2 or older versions of the OS. The next update of Localscope will require a minimum iOS 4.3 or higher versions. Users with older iOS versions are recommended to download this update and back it up using iTunes.

Here is a full list of What's New in v2.1
  • New interactive full screen map view for any location. Tap on the mini map to bring up the full screen map

We are nearing the first birthday of Localscope and feel proud to see how Localscope has benefited people in their daily lives. Localscope has helped people find places in the most intuitive ways possible and ensured that they get what they are looking for by seamlessly tapping into 5 diverse geo information sources. as search and retrieval is one of the primarily required applications in any field, we chose to start with it. However we have had a much larger vision of Localscope. We imagine Localscope to be a unique form of a browser that is designed to present and enable use of local information, just like web browsers present web pages. We imagine Localscope to become your high tech goggles that lets you see things around you that you otherwise couldn't. With version 2, we are taking a big step towards this vision.

Localscope v2

We realized that Localscope v1 is the perfect app to go to when you are looking for a new location or are in a new one. However, it isn't very useful when people are in a familiar place, i.e. home, office, school, etc. Localscope v2 changes that. Localscope now fetches geo-tagged photo and video content from various media sources and presents a unique new view of places, people and things around you. Now even familiar places that you spend most of your time in, come alive with fresh visual perspectives that enable you to rediscover your surroundings like never before. While Panoramio presents professional quality pictures of places, the Instagram source provides creative expressions of people around you and the Youtube source lets you see all published video content that is geo-tagged to your vicinity. Since each source provides unique types of content contributed socially or professionally, the diversity of information coming together in Localscope v2 provides an un-matched local discovery experience and serves up unprecedented results when you need to find anything around you.

Our technical challenge with v2 has been that while we increased the features in Localscope by more than 2 times of v1, we strived to make it faster, snappier and more intuitive than the first version. To achieve this, under the hood we have re-architected and re-written Localscope from ground up to make it scalable and performant. Along with these fundamental additions, Localscope v2 adds a lot of features and improvements, including the all new source manager that puts you in complete control of what sources are used and even their order of appearance in the source slider.

Following is a comprehensive list of whats new in Localscope v2:

  • Re-imagined and redesigned to provide geo tagged rich media along with local information
  • 6 new sources: Facebook places, Instagram, Flickr, Panoramio, Picasa and Youtube
  • Brand new gallery view for browsing geo tagged images and video.
  • Enabled Discover mode for Bing and Wikimapia sources
  • New source manager interface for Discover and Search - Enable, disable or re-order sources to your liking
  • New home dashboard
  • Results are now ordered by distance, nearest first
  • Richer list view, now displays star ratings and counts for checkins, likes and other relevant info.
  • Redesigned detail view - Now shows a lot of rich information from every source
  • Quick next / previous navigation between result details
  • Gesture driven image slideshow for viewing full screen pictures from the detail view
  • Improved map and augmented reality views with smoother transitions and animations
  • Refresh buttons for Map and Augmented Reality views
  • Improved source slider designed to easily switch between a large number of sources
  • Now, flick or tap the source slider to switch sources
  • New navigation app integration - iGo Primo
  • Richer location sharing via Email and Facebook
  • "Browse All Nearby" is now "Discover"
  • New in-app help and FAQ
  • Completely redesigned architecture provides for much improved performance
  • Enhanced overall user experience with improved gestures, animations and sounds
  • Super optimized for the iPhone 4S for blazingly fast performance

We believe that Localscope v2 is one of the best inventions to roll out of Cynapse and hope you enjoy using it as much as we do.
