We are nearing the first birthday of Localscope and feel proud to see how Localscope has benefited people in their daily lives. Localscope has helped people find places in the most intuitive ways possible and ensured that they get what they are looking for by seamlessly tapping into 5 diverse geo information sources. as search and retrieval is one of the primarily required applications in any field, we chose to start with it. However we have had a much larger vision of Localscope. We imagine Localscope to be a unique form of a browser that is designed to present and enable use of local information, just like web browsers present web pages. We imagine Localscope to become your high tech goggles that lets you see things around you that you otherwise couldn't. With version 2, we are taking a big step towards this vision.

Localscope v2

We realized that Localscope v1 is the perfect app to go to when you are looking for a new location or are in a new one. However, it isn't very useful when people are in a familiar place, i.e. home, office, school, etc. Localscope v2 changes that. Localscope now fetches geo-tagged photo and video content from various media sources and presents a unique new view of places, people and things around you. Now even familiar places that you spend most of your time in, come alive with fresh visual perspectives that enable you to rediscover your surroundings like never before. While Panoramio presents professional quality pictures of places, the Instagram source provides creative expressions of people around you and the Youtube source lets you see all published video content that is geo-tagged to your vicinity. Since each source provides unique types of content contributed socially or professionally, the diversity of information coming together in Localscope v2 provides an un-matched local discovery experience and serves up unprecedented results when you need to find anything around you.

Our technical challenge with v2 has been that while we increased the features in Localscope by more than 2 times of v1, we strived to make it faster, snappier and more intuitive than the first version. To achieve this, under the hood we have re-architected and re-written Localscope from ground up to make it scalable and performant. Along with these fundamental additions, Localscope v2 adds a lot of features and improvements, including the all new source manager that puts you in complete control of what sources are used and even their order of appearance in the source slider.

Following is a comprehensive list of whats new in Localscope v2:

  • Re-imagined and redesigned to provide geo tagged rich media along with local information
  • 6 new sources: Facebook places, Instagram, Flickr, Panoramio, Picasa and Youtube
  • Brand new gallery view for browsing geo tagged images and video.
  • Enabled Discover mode for Bing and Wikimapia sources
  • New source manager interface for Discover and Search - Enable, disable or re-order sources to your liking
  • New home dashboard
  • Results are now ordered by distance, nearest first
  • Richer list view, now displays star ratings and counts for checkins, likes and other relevant info.
  • Redesigned detail view - Now shows a lot of rich information from every source
  • Quick next / previous navigation between result details
  • Gesture driven image slideshow for viewing full screen pictures from the detail view
  • Improved map and augmented reality views with smoother transitions and animations
  • Refresh buttons for Map and Augmented Reality views
  • Improved source slider designed to easily switch between a large number of sources
  • Now, flick or tap the source slider to switch sources
  • New navigation app integration - iGo Primo
  • Richer location sharing via Email and Facebook
  • "Browse All Nearby" is now "Discover"
  • New in-app help and FAQ
  • Completely redesigned architecture provides for much improved performance
  • Enhanced overall user experience with improved gestures, animations and sounds
  • Super optimized for the iPhone 4S for blazingly fast performance

We believe that Localscope v2 is one of the best inventions to roll out of Cynapse and hope you enjoy using it as much as we do.

Navigation apps like TomTom, Navigon Mobile Navigator, provide advanced features for intuitive turn by turn navigation and directions. These apps on the iPhone have been steadily replacing the usage of dedicated in-dash GPS devices, as they are more cost effective, easier to update and ofcourse, integrate with Localscope! While most turn by turn navigation apps provide precise maps and directions, capabilities for searching for or discovering places range from being limited to nonexistent in these apps. Localscope, on the other hand, provides unmatched search and discovery capabilities; with a few swipes and flicks, you can tap into the collective knowledge from various search engines and social networks. Combining the power of Localscope with the accuracy of turn by turn navigation apps makes your iPhone a much more powerful and relevant GPS device than any dedicated GPS device in the market today.

Integrating with navigation apps has been one of the most asked for feature requests by our users. Further, since Localscope is a global app, we have received large number of requests for integrations with regional navigation apps, from users worldwide.

With this latest release, we are adding integrations with 4 more navigation apps - Magellan Roadmate, Navmii / Navfree, Sygic Navigation and MotionX GPS Drive HD (for the iPad) - totaling to support 11 navigation apps. Other integrations include: the built-in Maps app, Navigon Mobile Navigator, TomTom, MotionX GPS Drive, MetroView for Australia and NewZealand and Waze Social GPS app.

Localscope integrates with all the regional versions of the integrated apps. No matter which part of the world you live in, you can use Localscope in combination with any of the 11 navigation apps specific to your region.

Localscope automatically detects the supported navigation apps installed on your iPhone or iOS device and presents a list to choose from. With a single tap, you can jump right into one of your favorite apps from within Localscope to get turn by turn directions to your discovered place of interest.

The new and updated version of Localscope is now globally available on the Apple AppStore, for US$1.99 (or the equivalent in other currencies).

Some time back one of our users added a 5 star rating for Localscope in the App Store, with the following comment in French:

Parfaite - Application parfaite, remplace Aroundme. Aucun bug, très belle finition. Seule reproche : la langue. Mérite d'être un succès. Bravo aux développeurs.

{English Translation: Perfect application; replaces Aroundme. No bug, beautiful finish. One criticism: the language. Deserves to be a success. Congratulations to the developers.}

This and many similar requests by our users set in motion our journey of providing a seamless experience by enabling them to use Localscope in their native language. In the last few months we have released our app in 14 languages - in Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish, besides English. The use of the app in the countries speaking these languages has gone up significantly since then.

With this new release, we are increasing Localscope’s reach further by supporting 4 new languages - Danish, Finnish, Polish and Thai. This marks the completion of our first round of translations totaling to 19 languages. We are excited that a large number of iPhone users can now use Localscope in their mother tongue.

Localscope will automatically switch to the phone’s default language setting. The search terms are optimized for the 19 languages as well, so users can search and find destinations around them in their language.

Localscope v1.8 has also been optimized to work smoothly with the new iOS 5 - the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.

Give it a spin and enjoy discovering places around you in a language you speak! Localscope is available for US $1.99 in the App Store. The app is available for download at: http://j.mp/localscope

Millions of people use Foursquare every day to share their newly found locations, work place venue and more with their friends via checkins. The Foursquare search source in Localscope is a great way for users to discover new places and information about a location from the crowd sourced data. The information discovered via Foursquare is often unique while at times it solidifies your findings in the other sources. The newest update of Localscope, enriches the Foursquare source, to make discovery of locations even better.

Localscope integrates with Foursquare

Localscope now seamlessly integrates with the new APIv2 of the popular social network Foursquare. The new API enables us to present users with richer location results while searching in the Foursquare source in Localscope. Foursquare locations now come with phone numbers for locations - swipe any result from the list to quickly call the place or add them to your Address Book from the detail view.

In addition, Localscope now integrates with the Foursquare app for the iPhone. Users can quickly switch from the details of a location in Localscope to the details in the Foursquare app. Once in the Foursquare app, users can get access to insider information about a location from their network of friends or the Foursquare community - check out tips, recommendations, mayorships and deals at the location or simply check-in to the venue.

Another new feature is the in-app browser. This has been a highly requested feature by our users and it truly is a great way to explore detailed information from the web about a search location found in Localscope without the hassle of switching between Safari and Localscope. The new version of Localscope implements this with the ‘View more details’ button in the detail view of any search result from any of the search sources. Tapping the button launches the in-app browser with the web view for a result displaying details like reviews, photos and more.

Localscope is designed to be a global app. For the world that speaks local languages, we are enabling support for 6 new languages in Localscope including - Arabic, Traditional Chinese, Dutch, Greek, Russian and Swedish. With the new additions to the localizations, Localscope now totals to supporting 14 major languages covering the Americas and major parts of Europe and Asia. We are working on including more languages in future releases, if you would like to use Localscope in your language, drop us a note.

Visit the AppStore to get your update now. If you don’t use Localscope yet, it is globally available on the Apple AppStore, for US$1.99 (or the equivalent in other currencies).

6 months earlier, we set out with a vision to enable people to reference the enormous (and rapidly growing) wealth of geo specialized information contained in search engines and social networks, quickly and easily, with Localscope on the iPhone. User experience design has been one of our strengths and the iPhone enabled us to create the user experience of the future.

Today, we are elated to present Localscope for the TouchPad.

Redesigned around the native TouchPad experience, Localscope takes full advantage of the new form factor and the exclusive new capabilities of HP webOS 3.0 including ‘Just Type’ and ‘Exhibition Mode’.

Tablet devices are the future of computing.

Tablets enable a richer and more immersive experience to interact with information. Creating Localscope for the tablet devices has been an obvious step ahead for us. The tablet form factor opens up a lot of great possibilities for expressing information and presenting interactivity. In early days of designing Localscope for the tablet interface, we realized that to take advantage of these possibilities, we needed to re-imagine the Localscope interface from ground up around the tablet paradigm.

While our conceptual designs may be platform agnostic, we have always ensured we design our apps tightly around the strengths of the underlying platform. So to start with we chose to create Localscope for a couple of tablet platforms simultaneously. The HP webOS 3.0 platform, though new, allowed for unprecedented rapid development and we think it is one of the most promising and forward looking platforms out there.

Many interesting innovations in the webOS 3.0 platform fit well with Localscope. To our surprise, the Sliding Panels metaphor that our navigation design is based upon, is also the predominant metaphor used in most of the advanced interfaces of WebOS.

We used webOS 3.0 to our advantage to design Localscope ground up with a completely new interactive and gesture enabled way of using an application, new usage scenarios and use cases & a new interface. Navigating across the app with the gesture driven sliding panels provide an immersive tactile experience for discovering locations. Integration with ‘Just Type’ enables quick search for places in Localscope right from the TouchPad’s home screen. Though the lack of the compass in the API limits functionality a little, we hope HP does something about the compass soon.

Key features of Localscope for HP TouchPad:

  • ‘Just Type’ integration enables quick search for places in Localscope right from the Touchpad’s home screen
  • Gesture driven sliding panels provide an immersive tactile experience for discovering locations and navigating between them.
  • Rich details for each result with an interactive map to pinpoint location and navigate to it.
  • Save a result to contacts for future reference or set it as your current location to further explore the area around it.
  • Tap to directly call discovered locations using Skype or connected Pre or Veer phones
  • Easily share findings with family and friends using IM or Email

More about Localscope for HP

PCMag and Business Insider, both love Localscope and are recommending it in their list of The 10 Best applications for the TouchPad. We hope you like it too.

Localscope is available for US $2.99 in the HP App Catalog. The app is available for download at: http://j.mp/localscope-webos

Its time for another awesome version update for Localscope! V1.5 makes Localscope your Go To application to browse your vicinity and navigate to a point of interest. With this release, we extend the power of choice to our users - not only can you decide the search engines you want to use to discover new places or view your vicinity in List, Map or Augmented Reality view, but also choose your favorite navigation app to get you there, in your preferred language.

A quick rundown of the new features in version 1.5:
  • Now auto detects and integrates with MotionX GPS Drive, Waze Social GPS navigation and MetroView Australia & New Zealand GPS Navigation apps
  • Now available in 4 new languages including German, French, Italian and Spanish
  • Improved Facebook sharing. A thumbnail image of the map point is shared along with the link to the location giving your friends a quick glimpse of the point on the map
  • Scroll to the top of any list by simply tapping on the device status bar
Ideal Find and Drive Companion

Localscope is a mashup of social and local services enabling users to discover geo specific content and evolving the way way people discover their vicinity. While we aim to increase the choice of location search services and social networks integrated with Localscope, we realize that enabling users to do more with the results is equally important. This idea motivated us to do the first integrations with TomTom and Navigon MobileNavigator. From the feedback we received, our users really love the combination of searching for destinations in Localscope then navigating to them using one of the turn-by-turn navigation apps. Here's some of the heartfelt feedback left by our users:

“I bought this because i read you could use it with Navigon. Let me tell you how valuable this app is. We were traveling to florida with my 91 year old mother in the car. Approx 4 hours into the trip the car started chug chug chugging. It was a torrential rainstorm. I opened the app searched for car dealerships found the nearest one opened the map with navigon and flawlessly it took us there turn by turn. I am very thankful to have stumbled upon this app.”

“An augmented reality app that ACTUALLY works. I love the integration with TomTom (you obviously need to purchase TomTom separately). But I can search for something, and automatically navigate there using my TomTom app, great functionality!”

While these two integrations proved to be very useful for our users, we also heard that many of you like to use different apps for navigation due to the various benefits they offer. A large number of users use MotionX - the top grossing app in the Navigation category - with turn by turn directions and an appealing price ($0.99) MotionX GPS Drive is hands down the best and the most used navigation app. Others prefer using the free and community based real time crowd sourced traffic information app, Waze. MetroView a highly popular navigation app in Australia and New Zealand provides detail local maps and voice guided turn by turn directions, all in an unmistakeable Australian accent is a clear choice for the users down under. And some simply find Navigon MobileNavigator and TomTom too expensive. So we decided to increase our family of integrated applications to include these three popular applications as well.

If you already have any one of these applications installed - MotionX GPS Drive, Waze, MetroView Australia, MetroView New ZealandTomTom or Navigon MobileNavigator, Localscope will smartly detect them & enable you to launch one of them to navigate to a location. For the rest, the integration with the default Maps App can help you find directions to your destination.

Users can launch these navigation apps from inside Localscope in two ways:

  • Tapping the "Open Map" button from the detail view of a destination
  • Swipe a destination in the search results list, tap on the "Open Map" icon

Both these actions, slide up the options to start navigation to a destination using either the Maps App, MotionX GPS Drive, Waze, etc.. Tap on the navigation app of your choice to immediately initiate a turn-by-turn voice based (except Maps app) navigation to your place of interest.

Localscope speaks German, French, Italian and Spanish

Localscope has been designed to work globally. You can travel to any part of the world and be rest assured that Localscope will help you find places of interest around you. But the global world speaks many local languages. Many of our users from around the world too have requested for Localscope in their native languages. One of our users from France writes:

“Merci , il a remplacé around me et dis moi où. J'attends une mise a jour pour le français”

We have been listening and with Localscope v1.5, we begin our journey of enabling users worldwide to use their favorite GPS app in their native language. Localscope's search terms are now optimized for German, French, Italian and Spanish so you can search and find destinations around you in your language, enabling a seamless experience.

This is just a small start and more language support is planned for the future. Watch this space to know when Localscope starts speaking your language.

Other new changes

With Localscope v1.5, we have also improved sharing with Facebook. A thumbnail image of the map point is automatically attached and shared with the link to the location that you share with your friends on Facebook, giving them a quick glimpse of the point on the map. Also newly enabled is the shortcut to go to the top of any list within Localscope - simply tap on the device status bar and you will be taken back up to the top of the screen.

The new and updated version of Localscope is now globally available on the Apple AppStore, for US$1.99 (or the equivalent in other currencies). Visit the AppStore to get your copy now. With this new release, we’re confident that we’ve added something special to the navigation apps you already use.

Enjoy the new Localscope 1.5!

It seems like we just announced our “App of the Week” achievement in Australia and New Zealand. Now, a mere two weeks after receiving this award, Localscope has been added to Apple’s staff favorites list and featured on the front page of the App Store! It’s a direct recommendation that means a lot to us. We’re honored that Localscope has made it this far.

Localscope -Staff Favorites

But, this is only the begining. The market space of geolocation and location-based apps is growing in popularity at an alarming rate. In their research of the top ten consumer mobile applications for 2012, Gartner suggests that over 520 million people will use location-based apps. That’s up over 400 million from 2009! Location-based apps represent a white hot marketplace that’s only getting hotter, and we’re excited to be leading the charge with an app that truly pushes the envelope in several respects.

Localscope takes a step towards a brighter, more location-aware future. It brings information from different location-based services together in an intuitive and easy-to-use package. Starting with your location, Localscope suggests places you might want to visit, allowing you to quickly switch between results from Google, Bing, Foursquare, Wikimapia, and Twitter.

To date, there are few apps that can do this in such a smooth way. They may give you the results from one search engine or service, but you’ll have to use another app to broaden your horizons. With Localscope, all of the results are right in front of you, and it’s easy to switch between them to find more places you might be interested in visiting. It’s one of the fastest ways to discover what’s around you. Check out the video below for an in-depth review of Localscope by Reza Malayeri.

Integration is the future of geolocation apps, and we’ve only just begun. As we continue to develop Localscope, integration remains priority number one. Our goal for Localscope is to be the most intuitive search and browse interface for geo specific content. We want to evolve the way people discover and interact with their vicinity in inconceivable, altogether new ways. For our team, that means stitching all of the contextual information and location-based systems into a single seamless experience unlike anything currently available.

Want to keep up to date on our progress? Join us on our Facebook fan page to learn more about the new integrations and features we’re adding to Localscope. And if you still haven’t downloaded Localscope yet, head over to the App Store to check it out. This week, we’re featured in Apple’s “Staff Favorites” list. You can also find Localscope in the navigation category.

If you like Localscope, don't forget to rate and review it in the AppStore :)

The past two weeks have been nothing shy of amazing for us over here at Cynapse. We’re incredibly excited about the reception Localscope has received in the App Store, and the news just keeps getting better. Localscope is now the “App Of The Week” in Australia and New Zealand, and it’s in the “New And Noteworthy” category in 40 different countries.

As you can imagine, it’s been pretty busy over here. We just want to pause, take a deep breath, and thank you all for your enthusiastic support. We’re thrilled that so many of you are as excited as we are about the possibilities Localscope brings to the table. If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be here announcing this news. You make it all possible.

Here are some of the heartwarming things you have been saying about Localscope:

The positive reviews have been flowing in, both from down under and other corners of the globe. We want to thank Caleb MacGregor from NZiPhone.com for writing about using Localscope to find a coffee (and other things) nearby. He says the app “trumps all others in its class.” Ellis Hamburger from Business Insider loves the ability to visualize tweets and Foursquare checkins (we do too), and Derek Walter from TheAppPlanet says Localscope is “an excellent companion for going out, especially if visiting an unfamiliar city.” Thanks again for your reviews and your support.

We’re headlong into developing the next release of Localscope, and it’s going to have more of the features you love. We’re currently working on the following:

  • More navigation app integrations We know you love to use Localscope with TomTom and Navigon MobileNavigator, so we’re fast at work getting Localscope to work with other apps.
  • Local language support Localscope will soon recognize the dominant language in your area and structure its searches with it.

Stay tuned on our Facebook fan page to learn more about new features and future updates.

And if you haven’t used Localscope yet, we think you’re going to love it. Here is a video review to get a quick idea of its functionality:

Head on over to the App Store to check it out. We’re in the Navigation, On the Grid, New and Noteworthy, and College Bound sections.

We've been thrilled with the response that Localscope has been getting from iOS users across the world, since its release. From being recommended as one of the apps that brings a difference in the App Store trends, to the Ultimate Find & Drive combo, Localscope has been getting appraisals from experts and users alike.

null

We've learnt a lot from our customer's suggestions and feature requests, and are committed to implementing these as features in Localscope.

One such feature request is being made available immediately with the latest version update of Localscope. With this new update, Localscope integrates with the leading provider of location and navigation solutions - TomTom - enabling users to get turn-by-turn voice directions to the destinations they discover using Localscope.

Localscope integrates with TomTomLocalscope users love its simplicity and the ability to find new locations in their area or any new place they visit. With this new integration, we extend the power of choice to our users - not only can they decide the search engines they want to use to discover new places but also choose their favorite navigation app to get them there.

null

Users can launch TomTom from inside Localscope in two ways:

  1. Tapping the "Open Map" button from the detail view of a destination
  2. Swipe a destination in the search results list, tap on the "Open Map" icon

Both these actions, slide up the options to start navigation to a destination using either TomTom or the Maps App or Navigon MobileNavigator. Tap on your favorite navigation application to immediately initiate a turn-by-turn voice based (except Maps app) navigation to your place of interest.

nullBesides the integration with TomTom, we've enabled seamless sharing with the Facebook App for the iPhone. Being one of the first integrations of its type, it allows users to directly share locations from Localscope via the Facebook app on their device, without having to log in every time. You only need to authenticate the first time you are posting on Facebook with Localscope. Then you can edit the status update that you are wanting to post. Localscope already integrates with the Twitter app for the iOS devices. The link of the location is automatically shortened in your message for both Facebook and Twitter.

Check out a Localscope video review screencast by @CrazyMikeApps:

The new and updated version of Localscope is now globally available on the Apple AppStore, for US$1.99 (or the equivalent in other currencies). Visit the AppStore to get your copy now.

While we’re working on bigger ideas and releases for Localscope, the next update is already in the pipeline. Its been a month since we first released Localscope on the AppStore and it has been an exhilarating experience.  We've customer reviews from across the world - they've been positive and very encouraging, blog mentions and Apple love - yes, we got featured in the "New and Noteworthy" section through Christmas and New Year!

David Chartier over at MacWorld thinks "Localscope puts local services at your fingertips by offering a choice in the services you search and wrapping everything up with a thick coat of style". Christine Chan at AppAdvice recommends picking up Localscope, If you don’t have an app to help you find stuff nearby. Appolicious finds the user experience 'Tasty' saying the UI is slick and friendly, with a smart use of pulling and swiping. TheNextWeb and MakeUseOf loved the app and promoted it with a Giveaway each. And Spanish site MacVisions, calls Localscope a Google Places competitor :)

All the attention and good reviews have kept the excitement levels at Cynapse soaring high. But we aren't just sitting back and enjoying all of it, instead we've been working on bigger plans and ideating on taking Localscope to the next level. Localscope is a mashup of social and local services enabling users to discover places around a location. While we aim to increase the choice of location search services and social networks integrated with Localscope, we realize that enabling users to do more with the results is equally important. Our customers too have been requesting for features on these lines.

With this new release, Localscope seamlessly integrates with the multi award winning Navigon MobileNavigator GPS app for the iPhone. This means that users can find destinations with Localscope and be guided there using the amazing 3D panorama maps of Navigon MobileNavigator with voice guided turn by turn directions. Together, Navigon MobileNavigator and Localscope make the best location app combo out in the AppStore.

Also new in this version, Localscope sets the default distance units as US or Metric automatically based on the user's locale set on their iPhones, iPods or iPads.

The new and updated version of Localscope is now globally available on the Apple AppStore, for US$2.99 (or the equivalent in other currencies). Visit the AppStore to get your copy now.

If you like Localscope, don't forget to rate and review it in the AppStore :)

For about a decade now, we have been endeavoring to help people manage information and create knowledge. Our key research area however is to invent tools and interfaces to apply this knowledge to everyday life. With widespread adoption of GPS powered super smart phones that are always aware of their physical location in the world, a whole new plane of possible ideas has emerged. While working closely with Cyn.in customers we realized the importance of geo spatially relevant knowledge in Cyn.in. Diving deeper, we knew a lot of our ideas in this field were far from being limited to the needs of only a knowledge heavy enterprise.

We have always been a proponent of separation of interfaces from services, something that is usually a difficult sell in the web dominated world, but we found these principles to apply perfectly in the smart phone market, where niche interfaces are the need of the hour and broad, all purpose interfaces to services just do not work for everyday use. After putting one such idea through a couple of initial design cycles, we knew what we held in our hands, applied to a much, much broader audience than most mobile applications out there. To make our point, we decided to start with applying this interface to the largest services providing geo tagged information globally. The result, Localscope is probably one of our finest creations that will be appreciated and needed by possibly every smartphone user in the world! Though to begin with, only iPhone users can get their hands on it. We chose to start with the Apple iOS platform as we believe it is unarguably the best suited for our vision in terms of technology, marketplace and target audience.

Our vision with Localscope is to let people reference the enormous (and rapidly growing) wealth of geo specialized information contained in search engines and social networks quickly and easily, without having to figure out each of these services independently. Our goal for Localscope is to be the most intuitive search and browse interface to geo specific content and evolve the way people discover their vicinity. We see Localscope as a unique new tool; a 'vicinity browser' specialized for browsing information around and about the physical location of the user. Localscope is now globally available on the Apple Appstore, for an introductory launch price of US$0.99 (or the equivalent in other currencies) so go get it here. We hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoyed creating it.
