Dirk, that's an interesting comment. We are looking for an alternative to Groove but I can't see how cyn.in can be used in the "sometimes connected" world the way Groove is. We have some documents where we want the latest version accessible on the user's laptop even when they are not on the internet, and Groove replication has worked very well for us. I don't see how to provide that functionality in cyn.in. Perhaps I am not seeing something... can anyone help me out here?
I think I have answered my own question... or at least found one way. If I use Webdav in conjunction with a webdav file synchronisation tool such as Allway Sync I can get exactly what I want in terms of utility. This then raises some management questions. Can I prevent users synchronising EVERYTHING? Can I disable Webdav for some spaces?
Cyn.in provides WebDAV URL for each the spaces in the left bar. You may just go to a particular space and use the WebDAV URL from there in your WebDAV Client. Hope this helps.
If we are to apply cyn.in across a wide spectrum of knowedge management activities then I would regard this as a significant feature for the following reason.
In knowledge intensive industries, intellectual property is a subset of subset of corporate knowledge. We create it and maintain it as a source of competitive advantage. This is why (for example) governments spend significant effort and dollars on information security. Unauthorised or inadvertent disclosure reduces corporate value.
There is always a tradeoff between information security and ease of access. So across the range of knowledge that we manage it would be good to be able to specify a range of access methods that are allowed for authorised users. Specifically in this case I would like to be able to specify on a space-by-space basis whether WebDAV is available. Of course I do not know how technically difficult this might be.
Another significant aspect of information security is the logging of access. Does cyn.in log accesses to items in spaces? Does cyn.in log WebDAV access to items?
