Are there any intentions to add instant messaging (on a 1-to-1 level ala MSN Messenger) capabilities to cyn.in (via the browser and desktop client interface) ? I imagine it would be handy to be able to initiate a private conversation behind 2 or more designated parties (as opposed to broadcast type of communication model currently in cyn.in). Thanks.

I so love the idea :)

We are implementing xmpp based instant messaging for few of our customers. It is scheduled to be included in the product in the not-so-distant future :)

However, instead of implementing instant messaging, which can be good to know the status of the other person - is s/he online or away, Private messaging could also be another way to communicate with other users in the community.

IM brings along with it a whole lot of other problems - like some companies would not want the integration of the other IM like MSN / Gtalk in the Cyn.in IM.

With Private messaging users can communicate on a one to one basis. We could create an area where all the private messages are stored and accessible any time by the creators / contributors in the messages. This will drastically improve the decision making capabilities of the employees and at the same time enable private communication.

What do you think?

While I used MSN as an example of IM, maybe I should have used the example of the Gmail "Chat" function instead as that's really what I was thinking of; something directly integrated with the cyn.in browser/desktop client UI (as opposed to an external app). Basically, I was hoping to be able to send a message to someone within the content of cyn.in (eg. right-click on a user, send message).

I think a possible implementation of Romasha's private messaging concept could also be in the form of a chatroom (with the option of making it by invite-only/private/not visible to general public). The chatroom and conversations in that chatroom (in the form of a transcript) will be persistent and searchable (if private, will then only be searchable by creators and contributors).

Idea one... Add the private messenging in Cyn.in and implement it to seemlesly work with cyn.in desktop.

We have done a few custom integrations with eJabberd, and frankly prefer it in terms of performance to open fire. We are also considering Google Wave integration as well.

Google Wave? Meening that the Cyn.in server will need a direct connection to the internet? Meening that you will be using product still in development? Meening that you will let some other service provider (Google) log everything that your users do? Meening that if an Administrator wants to set everything up for a employe, he has to use that employes personal email to register to wave or create a new google wave account for him?

Minus, after a minus for Google Wave integration idea :-\

Google Wave wont just be a google service, it is a federated server concept over XMPP, and open source as well. We are considering and exploring the tech, will surely not use it in its current state.

The function of private message is more useful, as romasha said, it will be better if we can know the user's current status.
About IM, it will be enough to trigger a external IM tool in Cyn.in by clicking a link related with the user, for example Skype/MSN/GT.

We use openfire at our company, it would be useful if we could use this in conjuntion with cyn.in. Infact if you could tie it into any xmpp server that would be great. similar to configuring cyn.in to use any ldap server.

Community member eastxing has released an IM product for Plone: anz.ijabbar, that integrates iJab into a plone site. You could give it a try and see how it works with Cyn.in. Do share your experiences and feedback if any.
