What mobile devices would you like to see a Cyn.in Client in? Are the iPhone and Android platforms more appealing over the Blackberry / Windows Mobile / Symbian platforms?
Ain't all these brands based on target audiance? iPhone - IT Newbies that like fancy stuff Android - Those that like idea of freeware develpment Blackberry - "I wanna show you how buissniesy I am" Windows - "I wanna smartphone, I don't know what they are" Symbian - "I have a smartphone? Wow!"
Personaly I have Android, but am thinking of going to Symbian again or Windows mobile :)
It might not be as cool as the iPhone or NexusOne, but the BlackBerry still drives the business community, and if you want corporate buy-in you've got to support BlackBerry early, and robustly.
I've been in the IT biz for over 15 years and I love my iphone! Am I still considered a IT newbie? Anyway, a lot of my clients are going to the Droids.
If I look at our community, lots of iPhone, BlackBerries too. But I think the most important would be a "generic" light http UI for mobile devices, even if I would LOVE to have an iPhone app to connect on cyn.in, like there is one for Alfresco.
Yes, a lightweight UI that would be usable on more mobiles as opposed to a native client interface that would be cool, but only on 1mobile platform, would seem to be the wise decision to take for having maximum reach to users. We've considered this for a bit, and looking at the above various answers at least, it's obvious there's no *clear* winner in the mobile arena.... yet.
Having a "standard" mobile interface also does not disallow a native mobile client, either, so we could still go ahead and build a native client interface for a particular platform after the standard one was done, yes?
One thing is sure, if we develop our community with cynin in my company, I'll have to code an iPhone client, but that's lot of work, and I'm not familiar with XML/RPC
I'm using HTC HD2 with Winodws Mobile 6.5, but HTC and others are using Opera Mobile as primary mobile browser, so not Windows Mobile but Opera Mobile wel be my favourite.
I think that a generic web app that works on all mobile browsers will be the perfect choice. Developing a native client is cool but I think that the web app is better. Anyway ... my vote goes to Symbian and Android
It would seem that PhoneGap is a good fit: http://www.phonegap.com/ PhoneGap is an open source development framework for building cross-platform mobile apps. Build apps in HTML and JavaScript and still take advantage of core features in iPhone/iTouch, iPad, Google Android, Palm, Symbian and Blackberry SDKs.
I see this discussion has been here for quit a while. I have no technical remarks, just that having the most simple feature which works for most of the phones would be the best start. I just wonder what the status of the development is after this discussion: has a decision been made? And when can we expect it to be implemented?

that's in USA I guess but if everywhere I think symbian is the most popular. (probably because it's most affordable)
