I see this discussion has been here for quit a while. I have no technical remarks, just that having the most simple feature which works for most of the phones would be the best start. I just wonder what the status of the development is after this discussion: has a decision been made? And when can we expect it to be implemented?

It would seem that PhoneGap is a good fit: http://www.phonegap.com/
PhoneGap is an open source development framework for building cross-platform mobile apps. Build apps in HTML and JavaScript and still take advantage of core features in iPhone/iTouch, iPad, Google Android, Palm, Symbian and Blackberry SDKs.

I think that a generic web app that works on all mobile browsers will be the perfect choice. Developing a native client is cool but I think that the web app is better.
Anyway ... my vote goes to Symbian and Android

Yes, a lightweight UI that would be usable on more mobiles as opposed to a native client interface that would be cool, but only on 1mobile platform, would seem to be the wise decision to take for having maximum reach to users. We've considered this for a bit, and looking at the above various answers at least, it's obvious there's no *clear* winner in the mobile arena.... yet.

Having a "standard" mobile interface also does not disallow a native mobile client, either, so we could still go ahead and build a native client interface for a particular platform after the standard one was done, yes?

If I look at our community, lots of iPhone, BlackBerries too.
But I think the most important would be a "generic" light http UI for mobile devices, even if I would LOVE to have an iPhone app to connect on cyn.in, like there is one for Alfresco.
