Why would new users *not* automatically be subscribed to receive email alerts when people post discussions/content? I'm trying to get users engaged, but it's difficult if I have to coach them on how to 'subscribe to the activity stream' in order to see what's going on. Isn't there some way to auto-subscribe new users? Why isn't this the default, then turn it off if it gets to be too much email?

Sending an email automatically for any content edited or discussed upon by default, would create a lot of email clutter. Here, we give users an option to choose the updates that they would like to subscribe to. However, if you would like to change the default functionality, we provide services to customize Cyn.in for our commercial editions.
Please do share your experiences of implementing Cyn.in and getting it adopted at your organization.
You can also go through the Best Practices document that provides some guidelines to enabling Cyn.in adoption: http://www.cynapse.com/[…]/best-practices-of-using-cyn.in

I recently read somewhere (I think on twitter) about someone complimenting Cyn.in because of email-less collaboration, even. :)
So... what's your use case? Do you really want everyone in your community emailed for all activity? Or only a particular *set* of users? Internally (in ubify.policy setup code) we set this to be the way it is, so while it *is* in a way possible to re-tweak for your particular setup, I would not recommend it without knowing your scenario.
BTW: One of the things we're going to look at doing in the near future is allowing users to let themselves be auto-subscribed to notifications by email for items that they create, possibly even by default. Will this solve your problem?
Jim.
Have you tried this?
thanks again, Jim.
