Two years ago Dion Hinchcliffe asked the question “Can web 2.0 be adapted to the Enterprise”. Andrew McAfee of Harvard Business school had then just coined the term Enterprise 2.0 which revolved around enabling ad-hoc collaboration via freeform, emergent and social software for potential outcomes. Today, new age technologies are being crafted for enterprise use and are being adopted by businesses to increase productivity and improve collaboration amongst employees. Enterprise 2.0 technologies enable Collaboration using wikis, blogs, tagging systems, RSS, discussion forums, instant messaging, search and more making the collective intelligence of an organization accessible increasing innovation, innovation, productivity and agility. At the core, these technologies aim at interconnecting employees with other employees, partners, customers and business knowledge; gradually becoming mission critical to the success of the businesses. So, How do I use these Enterprise 2.0 technologies to help my business? Andrew McAfee lists 8 ways as to how these infrastructures can be used to benefit businesses:
  1. For Collaborative Document production - Wikis
  2. To build an encyclopedia – Knowledge Repositories
  3. As an All-purpose teamware
  4. As a war room for fast-changing situations
  5. For Knowledge Broadcast - Blogs
  6. For broadcast search
  7. For crowdsourcing
  8. To express collective judgment
Together these technologies can be best applied and consumed in the company intranet that can behave as a unified platform for employees to work together, exchange knowledge and gain from other’s experiences. Enter Intranet 2.0. Intranets for long have been document centric. But documents and content are useless without knowing who created it, why was it created and how was it used. Employees need to be able to search for people, expertise, previously created information easily to increase productivity. Intranets 2.0 enable an open environment that encourages user participation and empowers employees to help create and organize the information they need, effectively. Cyn.in adapts these Web 2.0 philosophies and concepts to create an offering focusing on enterprise requirements and benefit areas. Cyn.in becomes an extension of your workplace, making it easy for people to connect, share ideas, store project information, review documents, discuss and make quick decisions. I'd love to know how your business is using an Enterprise 2.0 technology to benefit your business productivity.

cyn.in on InformationWeekPeter Hagopian has posted an interesting piece on cyn.in in the InformationWeek's Content Management blog. He finds the different delivery models of cyn.in i.e. On-Premise Appliance, On-Demand SaaS and the Open Source Edition. Here's an excerpt from his post:
Cyn.in V2 Offers Solid Features And An On-Site Appliance Option. Cyn.in v2 offers a laundry list functionality in an integrated system. I've only just started kicking the tires on the free version, but with value-minded pricing, interesting installation options, and an impressive set of features, cyn.in v2 is likely to turn some heads.
cyn.in v2 has been designed based on customer requirements and experiences we gained from v1. No two customer requirements are the same and hence one plan doesn't suit all. The open source edition allows companies to download and evaluate the system features for free. Whereas the On-Premise Appliance and the On-Demand SaaS Editions give Enterprise and Small Business customers the choice to host cyn.in in their premises behind their firewall or use cyn.in as a service and take advantage of the Pay-as-you-use model. Thanks for the mention, Peter. The detailed article can be viewed here: http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2008/07/cynin_v2_offers.html

Here's a blast from the past: I've figured out how to make Cynapse InfoCryptor work on Ubuntu Desktop. Here's how you can do it too:
  1. Install the lastest version of Wine (I used 1.0)
    1. First, open a terminal window (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). Then add the repository's key to your system's list of trusted APT keys by copy and pasting the following: wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - Next, add the repository to your system's list of APT sources: For Ubuntu Hardy (8.04): sudo wget http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/sources.list.d/hardy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list
    2. Update APT's package information by running 'sudo apt-get update'.
  2. Install Winetricks
    1. wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks -O ~/winetricks.sh
    2. chmod +x ~/winetricks.sh
  3. Install all 3 MDAC components from the GUI that comes when you run:
    1. ~/winetricks.sh
  4. Install and run Infocryptor as normal. It will appear under Wine -> Programs -> Cynapse in your Ubuntu Main menu.
Known Issues Copy paste functionality of passwords is not working! :-(

More than half the respondents; 53% said that they are already using open source applications in their organizations, today. 45% revealed that the primary reason to not use open-source software at their company has been due to Product support concerns! Awareness or knowledge that an open-source application that solves their requirement exists is lacking according to 29%. While 26% have security concerns and 22% lack support by management. About a quarter of corporations 27% have a formal policy in place regarding open-source applications, though 18% expect to adopt such a policy in the next 12 months Although they have full control over the code, enterprises clearly want assurance that someone will answer tech support calls. Companies offering open source need to convince their enterprise prospects that their software is backed by extensive support. Support could be offered in various ways via mail, forums, phone, online support ticketing systems or even IM. Companies need to create special pages on their website informing prospects about the various support offerings, increase awareness of the benefits of the application and the problems it solves. This will greatly help the enterprises to adopt high-value yet freely available open source technologies.

cyn.in is sponsoring the Indibloggies - The Indian Weblog Awards. The Indibloggies is an effort by blogger Debashish Chakrabarty to showcase the outstanding talent in the Indian Blogosphere.

The Indibloggies Awards unlike others is a highly interactive award system with three different phases. The first two phases of the awards that included an open nomination via del.icio.us and the jury rating are over. The final list of the nominees is out and are open for public voting. The 175 nominated blogs are distributed in around 16 categories ranging from technology blogs to photo blogs and blogs in various other Indian languages.

Blogging as a medium has gained large acceptance amongst the Indian intellect and people are using it as a means to voice their opinions. According to an MSN survey there are around 3.5 million active bloggers in the Indian cyberspace. The Indibloggies awards is an excellent means to create more opportunities for these bloggers and generate more interest.

What's most important to us is that we as a technology company are able to provide the technology to enhance and encourage the evolution in the blogosphere. I can only describe this whole evolutionary development as amazing.

cyn.in is sponsoring the prizes for the Best Indiblog of the year among other categories. Go ahead and cast your vote for your favorite Indiblog!

The Cynapse office has been abuzz with action for the past couple of days. The dev team has been working hard to meet the timelines to release the new Updates for cyn.in. The changes have finally been implemented and I am very excited to present the new updates to you.

But before that, a big applause for our cyn.in dev team who build at supersonic speeds marked by meticulous precision and deliver to meet extreme timelines. I bet NASA would do anything to get them on their side!

Update #3 includes a few bug fixes and some really interesting feature enhancements that are focused to improve usability. The web space of cyn.in have been modified to increase SEO optimization of the the content. The search engines will find reading content from the cyn.in sites much easier than before.

Introducing the Page Slider

Have you been on Page 2 of your notes list, clicked on the back button of your browser and not been able to go back to Page 1? Have you often felt the need of the Page Slider to be at the bottom of the notes list? Well, your wishes just came true.

cyn.in introduces an innovative Page Slider with two way usability. So you can now directly jump to the page you wish to see or simply browse through the pages.

The dropdown on the slider smoothly rolls out a sleek bar with the list of the pages. Simply click on the page number you want to browse to and access the notes on that page. The paging also gives you the advantage to bookmark a page and navigate to it directly.

This new slider aims to reduce your time to browse through your notes and work more efficiently. The Slider is now also placed at the bottom of the pages. This enhances your browsing experience as well as increases efficiency.

Selective Comment Deletion

The site owner has the rights to delete all comments on a note in cyn.in. This didn't work out to be as functional as there are times, when you want to keep a few comments and do away with the rest.

With the new enhancements, the owners of a site can choose the comments they want to delete. Comments once deleted cannot be got back again. The option to delete all comments is still available.

Better Attachment Layout

The boring two attachment in a row layout has now been replaced to adjust to your screen resolution. Higher the resolution of your screen, more number of attachments will fit in a row.

This will help reduce the length of the page again enhancing your usage experience. No more long pages to scroll through

Feature Requests and Feedback

We would love to hear what you think of the recent updates. We use cyn.in internally for our knowledge and project management requirements and increasing the speed of operation and usability is a task close to all of our hearts and we strive to achieve it.

We are always open to feeback and feature requests. So go ahead, try out your updated cyn.in site and tell us what you like/dislike. Post your comments right here or in the support forums.

Subscribe to the Updates SlashTag

RSS Feeds are an easy way to keep track of the updates to your cyn.in site. Just Subscribe to the "Updates RSS feed" (see left side bar) and the updates will be sent straight into your RSS reader.

"Why do I need a blog?" Have you been asked this question before? Have you faced problems in convincing your CXO about the benefits of blogging? Or have you posed this question to your Marketing head? If you said a ‘yes’ to any of the questions above, this post for you. Very simply, a Blog is the easiest way to communicate effectively with your customers, readers and employees. Blogging is the most comfortable way to update your company website and inform readers about the developments in your business. Blogs can be used internally in a company to improve communication within the organization, for collaboration and knowledge sharing. Some of the benefits that blogging brings for businesses that also form powerful reasons for making the investment are:

  1. Blogs are low-cost quick web publishing tools
  2. Blogs can be used as a tool to share the company's management views with the customers
  3. Enterprise blogging can help you engage customers, help you build your business and increase brand recognition
  4. Blogs act as great marketing material e.g. link to a positive testimonial or blog post related to your offerings
  5. Blogs work out to be an excellent vehicle for customer feedback
  6. Business blogging can be a powerful communication tool, as good as newsletters or mail
Technology, you might think, is one of the biggest barriers to implementing a blog strategy in most of the non-blogging companies. Wrong! Surveys prove that a majority of these companies fear of losing control about what the employees write and the company message being conveyed.

cyn.in's inherrent nature of securely managing roles makes it a very powerful enterprise blogging tool. Here's how you can use cyn.in for your business blog
:
  1. cyn.in enables you to decide which employees have the right to publish to the web. This takes care of most of the risks involved with losing control to the information being published.
  2. Create a draft blogging plan, where people can publish to the Intranet space and get some inputs internally before going live with the content.
  3. SlashTags enable a Single Click Publish of the blog post to the web
  4. Have a SlashTag in the Intranet space that lists out blogging policies and FAQs
  5. cyn.in supports advanced RSS feed broadcasting with special Filecast feeds that enable you to distribute relevant information and files to your customers.
  6. cyn.in's web space is SEO friendly that helps in increasing your search engine rankings, benefiting the marketing.
  7. cyn.in allows guest users to comment on your posts on the web, enabling you to get comments from genuine users. The guest user registration completely eliminates spam comments

cyn.in provides easy and effecitve ways to organize content.
We use cyn.in as our Internal and external blog apart from using it for bug tracking, collaboration, knowledge and process management.

Mark Harvey has been reviewing tools on his blog to help them communicate, collaborate and operate more effectively. He does a wonderful job describing his experience of using cyn.in:
"...I recently reviewed the cyn.in bliki and was impressed with both its functionality and ease of use. It’s a neat platform which, although might appear a little foreign when you look at the initial blank screen, really picks up steam after you begin creating a few notes or posts. It also nets high marks for its refreshingly uncluttered user interface." I couldn't agree more. Ever since we have started using cyn.in internally, individual productivity has drastically increased. Creating content in the web based word editor is as easy as using a desktop office. The clean UGM (Usable by Grand Mothers) interface is very intuitive for a comparatively novice user to start creating and collaborating on content. Ten minutes saved equals to a lot of time, money and effort saved.
Thanks for the mention Mark.

One of my favorite bloggers, Rod Boothby of Innovation Creators has posted a very interesting post accompanied with an active poll, on how companies should start implementing a Read/Write Intranet to increase efficiency. I am sure all the professionals and companies using cyn.in would concur.

The same could be said about Cynapse. Before we built cyn.in, we tried using various Intranet services and software, delivered by big and small companies each one with their humungous learning curve. Ideally those systems should have increased the collaborative productivity and help us manage our knowledge better. In reality, we invested a lot of time and resources in the implementation and understanding the usage of these systems. But none of them satisfied our requirements and made us wonder: "We are a technology company, if we are finding it difficult to find an easy to use system to store, manage, collaborate on our knowledge, what do companies with no technology expertise do"

Needless to say, we are now using the cyn.in Bliki for our Intranet and have completely got riddance from the pre-defined structure of folders and categories used in legacy environments. cyn.in has increased our productivity many folds by enabling us to have a centralized 24/7 web based access to all our business knowledge. The self explanatory, de-jargonized and 100% WYSIWYG use interface reduces the average learning curve to less than 3 hours. cyn.in combines the benefits of a blog and a wiki surpassing version management, collaboration, creation and sharing of data and much more.

Check out Rod's post on Read/Write Intranet and do cast your precious vote for cyn.in ;)
