cyn.in update number 2 rolled out this morning, with minor bugfixes, and a few small changes in the functioning of the user interface. Presenting... The Preview window! Clicking on a file thumbnail now pops up a preview window. A few discerning users might have already found this window (earlier, it would only appear if the file name was clicked). If the file is an image you can view (and download) the image in its original size and percentage resized sizes as well. The image resizing options allow percentage downsized downloads which can be extremely useful for the digital asset management customers of cyn.in. You can upload your original large creatives and download them resized to your requirements. This functionality is supported by cyn.in's unique dynamic image downsizer feature which allows image downloads at any percentage or resolution scale at high quality. More interface functionality is coming up on this soon, as usual, we'll keep you posted right here. The file preview window also allows you to preview and download attachments of previous versions of the note as well - the cyn.in versioning system automatically creates new revisions for files that are updated. Going back Home In cyn.in the lowest common unit of information is the note. Each note has a page view dedicated to showing note information in full glory - you can see all the SlashTags a note belongs to (bolded) as well as view details (if you're a logged in member of the site) and have further interactions with that note. You can see this view (we call it the Single Note View) every time you create a new note, or when you click the note's title, later. We now provide a link to go back to the home SlashTag from this Single Note View as shown in the picture along side. This will take you back to the Home SlashTag of the Space that this note is on, currently. Edit your Profile When you login to a cyn.in site, you will see a new Edit Profile link next to your name. This link will take you to your profile page. In cyn.in all users have a common profile, that can be edited by clicking on this Edit Profile link. This link would earlier appear only for guest cyn.in users, we've now brought uniformity to the user interface - professional and enterprise site users will also now get this link next to their names. Feedback As always, any kind of feedback is welcome and appreciated. Just post in the support forums (available to all members of both Enterprise and Professional sites).

Our first update has been released!

Date: I bet some of you noticed that we're now showing the date and authors on the note Info bar now - this gives you succinct information about when the note was last updated and who the authors of the note are. You can now go ahead and brag about your new cool looking cyn.in bliki to all your friends. :)

Multiple authors: When a note has more than one author, we show the first names of as many authors we can on the Infobar. Of course, the full names of the authors can be seen by clicking on the Show Info link on the right.

Bugfixes & Enhancements: Under the hood there have been several enhancements and fixes. This includes better error reporting, enhanced single note view (click on the title of a note to see the note in it's full glory), and numerous other small fixes to solve problems that would have manifested themselves over time.

How do you upgrade?
If you're a site owner, all you have to do to upgrade is....... nothing! Your site has been upgraded automatically as part of this cyn.in maintenance release. Upgrades are automatically provisioned to all sites as soon as they are ready. You don't have to do anything - no installations, no configurations, no worries - your site has been automatically updated to the latest release without you lifting a finger. Now is that cool or what? :)

We've noticed that a lot of our site owners that are starting off creating their websites upload their logos. This makes your cyn.in site look exceptionally cool, especially on the Intranet and email notifications.

What we're going to show you today though, is:

How to make a cool looking banner for your cyn.in site
At cyn.in we constantly endeavor to make the user interface easily usable. Our appearance customization system while quite simplistic to use, is quite featureful.

There are customization areas in the top banner, the left sidebar and the footer areas of the Web Space of every cyn.in site. Each area has the full power of a cyn.in note, you can put in any kind of files, pictures, complex HTML markup with tables, css and whatever formatting you need.

For now, let's show you the simple table design of the cyn.in blog's banner and the nice effect it achieves with a tiled image.

To manage the appearance of your cyn.in site, click on the Manage Site link and then on the Appearance tab. Be patient, this page has a lot of rich editing controls, so it may take a while to load.

Let's take a look:

You can  easily customize the displayed areas for your cyn.in site.

The logo appears on your Intranet and on all the RSS feeds that your site can generate.

The banner, sidebar and footer areas can be edited to show up on top, left and bottom areas of your cyn.in site.

The banner area's a great place to show off your creative skills, and sets the feel for the rest of the site.

The sidebar's good for displaying information about you, your site and showing off anything that's applicable site-wide for your web visitors.

All of this is optional of course. For example, we'd rather leave the footer area of the cyn.in blog blank for now, so on the Web Space of blog.cyn.in, you'll notice that nothing appears at the bottom area.

The Banner Area

For now, let's concentrate on the banner area. Let's zoom in a bit:

The blog.cyn.in banner is composed using a standard 5 column HTML table. Don't be perturbed by the way it looks in the rich editor, tables tend to get a bit offset in it, due to extra borders, and the editing controls, the preview button should show you exactly how it will look. The exact HTML source is :

<table style="width: 100%;" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
    <tbody>
         <tr>
              <td><img src="/sites/default/files/images/blog/2008/07/blog-left.gif"></td>
              <td style="width: 50%;" background="/f/410/647/blog_tile_gif.file">
                   &nbsp;
              </td>
              <td>
                   <a href="http://blog.cyn.in">
                   <img src="/sites/default/files/images/blog/2008/07/blog-center.gif" border="0">
                   </a>
              </td>
              <td style="width: 50%;" background="/f/410/647/blog_tile_gif.file">
                   &nbsp;
              </td>
              <td><img src="/sites/default/files/images/blog/2008/07/blog-right.gif"></td>
         </tr>
    </tbody>
</table>

This can be easily generated using the table wizard of the cyn.in rich editor. Alternatively, if you're more comfortable with HTML source, you can create the base HTML in your favorite rich HTML editor and paste the code into the source code editor as well. Images for the banner are uploaded by clicking the "Media" button.

The banner table has 5 columns. The first and the last column are for the curve images to the left and right. The 2nd and 4th columns are tiled to fill up to 50% width each - the background image in these columns is the same and the web browser will stretch this area fluidly, filling it by tiling the background image. The 3rd column in the center contains the center image of the banner and also a link on it so that people can click on it to go to the home page.

That's it, that should get you on your way to creating your own banner for your cyn.in site. Don't have one yet? Get one now, it's free!

Tips:
  1. If you put a link on an image, remember to set the image to have border width of 0 pixels, else you'll see ugly blue borders on it.
  2. Remember to center your banner, even if the banner appears on the center for your screen, some people with high resolution or widescreen monitors could visit your site too!
  3. Your banner can only look as good as the images in it, design your images using a good photo as a base with your favorite image editing tool.
  4. This example is pretty advanced, any image uploaded into the banner area should make your site look quite cool - don't be afraid to experiment!

Post a comment here with the URL of your site and everyone can have a look at it and give you suggestions. :)

Roger Kondrat tries to find the answer in the cyn.in Enterprise Bliki. It feels great when a writer comes along and writes about cyn.in, works in boosting the team morale. Here's an excerpt mentioning cyn.in, the article is worth a read-through as it covers cyn.in in easy to understand tone.

"From what I can see this content management system (now CMS) is pretty amazing, and not only is it feature rich but its being delivered as an SaaS which means no need to hire more techies, software developers, etc."

An extensive and well written overview of cyn.in

Mark Gibbs, noted expert in the area of systems architecture and design, co-founder of Netratings Inc., presents a step-by-step approach to explaining cyn.in on Network World. Though he finds the term "bliki" one of the annoying acronyms of the year, he is surely recommending cyn.in. Here's an excerpt: "...I suspect that cyn.in would be a great organizing mechanism for projects that are somewhat freeform in terms of content. I recommend checking out cyn.in – it could make collaborative group work much better." cyn.in is our step to deliver our technology that has finally matured, to a global spectrum of audiences. cyn.in gives the Enterprise the combined advantages of both, a blog and a wiki powered by Selective Open-ness, content Ownership and most importantly Measurability. Thanks for the exclusive coverage, Mark!

Almost any company or enterprise that adopts cyn.in will draw all the benefits of cyn.in and gain from the Software as a Service strategy. Often, we are asked to define the direct target vertical segment of cyn.in and invariably I find it difficult to point my finger on one. For one simple reason, cyn.in is targeted to the horizontal segment of collaborative enterprise information management.

So following are few characteristics of the knowledge businesses; cyn.in is targeted towards and would benefit the most.

Companies with many teams; especially geographically separated In a knowledge intensive organization, knowledge workers in a team share and work in a collaborative manner. If the teams are extended geographically, member interaction becomes more complex with the lack of proper collaboration tools. This reduces effective performance of teams and results in losses to the company. But at the same time, moving an entire extended enterprise to a new collaboration solution is intimidating.

cyn.in is a service based software delivered over the Internet. The SaaS approach, gives the enterprise the option to migrate only selected teams to cyn.in.

Since all your information is stored in a central location, on the Internet, team members can access and work on the same document or file from anywhere. All you need is an active Internet connection and a browser!

cyn.in helps you to create a consistent business environment for your teams over the internet.

Fast moving organizations

In fast moving entrepreneurial companies, speed and flexibility are key characteristics. Opportunities have to be reacted to quickly. Customersatisfaction is of prime importance and at the same time processes have to be defined and implemented. In such a charged environment, the company cannot afford to spend the time and resources to develop new processes or technology. They have to constantly increase their capabilites.

cyn.in helps reduce the response time of the employees of such an organization. cyn.in’s SaaS model gives you the power to perform and not worry about the technology or infrastructure. Any number of new employees can be quickly integrated into the company’s process by simply moving them onto your cyn.in. Start-ups

In the startup phase of a company, research is imperative. The knowledge gained has to be disseminated throughout the organization and a large amount of exchange of information takes place. This knowledge is critical since it will play an active role in deciding the company’s strategy. Even small amounts of unshared or non-harnessed information might turn out to be a significant risk to the early stage company. cyn.in helps start-ups create, manage, share and publish knowledge with ease and in an affordable secure manner. cyn.in being a SaaS based solution gives a start-up an opportunity to first understand the software and measure it’s long term value at very low costs. The large technology investments are also waived off as the software is hosted with cyn.in. cyn.in is great for Information collaboration & management for Enterprises and the SaaS model just adds the cherry on the cake. Simply erfect! You can now use the free Professional Edition of cyn.in and experience the power of cyn.in delivered as a Service.

Sumant points out on his cyn.in site, Friends.cyn.in how a student from a college in Kerala, India has pioneered a high capacity storage device out of ordinary paper. Sainul Abideen, the whizkid student, has built the whole technology out of his college labs under professorial guidance and has already been acknowledged on the Deccan Herald, a daily Indian newspaper and online site.

Screencasts
We've been adding more screenshots to the Screencast SlashTag, hope you've been checking. :)
For those of you who prefer to see each screenshot individually, the /Screencast SlashTag should be pretty interesting. The cyn.in DAM features dynamic resizing of pictures - click the filename to see it in action.

Slideshow Widgets
More interesting, of course, is the Slideshow widget demonstration on cyn.in, which showcases the very same pictures from the /Screencast SlashTag live on the cyn.in site.

Me?

I like looking at the pictures in our Dashboard gallery. Now there's something that you've been missing. You can upload any kind of picture into a note and it'll show up in your Dashboard gallery automatically. If you publish it on the Intranet or Web Space or even share it with someone, it'll show up on their respective Dashboards too.

Now, how's that for cool? :)

Audio Podcasts have become the recent rage in the blogosphere, with everyone from Scoble's new podtech company to Kevin Rose's hugely popular Diggnation podcast, participating in interviews, sending out words to huge  audiences of listeners and blog readers is the new fad. The spoken word is definitely more powerful than the written one, especially so when the speaker knows the topic and speaks well. Podcasts are now a raging phenomenon because:
a. They are based on RSS technology which is now adopted, extended and used more widely than soap (or so it seems, at least!)b. A complete plethora of playing mechanisms and audience. You name it - nearly every device that is coming to market has podcast support.
So? Addressing an audio podcast audience is really easy with cyn.in - we made sure that content broadcasting is easily doable for all customers. Audio podcasting is really as easy as 1 - 2 - 3 in cyn.in;  let me show you how: Step 1: Create audio: To podcast audio, you need to have one or more audio files. Audio files in podcasts are usually in the MP3 file format and MP3s can be created from just about anywhere these days, too. For the purpose of podcasting, you could record your voice using various software tools, I'll be profiling these (if the time-space continuum permits, of course) later. You could even go full steam ahead and record a Skype or telephonic interview, I'll put in a few words about these too, if I can. In essense, you need to have an audio file to broadcast / podcast it. It really is that simple. Step 2: Create a note: All you really have to do to podcast your audio files in cyn.in is upload them into a note and publish it. cyn.in will take care of the rest. Have you seen the Audio Podcast feed yet? :) Step 3: Podcast!: You can now proceed to publicize your podcast feed. How do you do that? Simply copy-paste the Podcast feed URL into any podcast consumer and you're set. Read on, I'll show you how.
Create a note: First, we need to create a note that will have our audio files. Simply press the New Note button (on the top left) in your cyn.in site. Put in a title, and some content in the body - these will be used in your podcast, so do put in some sensible stuff.
Upload Files: Select one or more mp3 files to add to this note. These files will appear in your podcast feed. SlashTag this note something meaningful (/audio would be a good bet) and....
Publish it! Don't forget to publish it to the web, this is important. The podcast feed will still be available if you don't publish to the Web Space, but will require user authentication to be used (of course if this is what you intended, then you're The Boss!)
Now that you got the drearily simple task of creating a note with files out of the way let's get to the more fun, podcasting parts. :) Podcasting Podcasting deals with two flip sides of the same coin. On one side there is broadcasting (cyn.in) and on the other, there is pod-catching (devices, other web2.0 services, etc.). What we've set up until now is the broadcasting side of the podcasting coin. Let's check out some possibilities of using the content that we just created. First, a test Let's see how our podcast feed looks (and sounds) like in Google Reader, a full-featured, free, online RSS  ggregrator service from Google.
Let's copy and paste the URL of the podcast feed from the Web Space SlashTag /audio/TheMatrix.
And voila! our feed shows up with the standard Google Player. And hmm....... I think I liked the old Google Reader layout better - it was more readable. Whatever.
I'll also take some screenshots from my odeo odyssey, as well. Odeo seems to make it excessively difficult to add an external feed, I had to look in the FAQ. Anyways, let's see what the odeo playlist creator and player do with our audio podcast feed. Hmmmm........ not bad. There's an inbuilt player. With a single click to play any item on the podcast playlist. Not bad at all. :) So what's all this for. Really. Everybody's been looking at the Podcast medium to be the next big, no really big explosion. You can be at the forefront of all this, by creating targeted, concentrated spoken content, easily and quickly. Simply record your "Save The World" plan, or your big marketing pitch and save the mp3 file into a note. That's all it takes for you to get started. Your viewers can use any audio podcast listening service or device to hear all you have to say, without jumping through multiple hoops or you having to bother with how the whole thing works. Try our pre-populated demo today, or better yet, get yourself a cyn.in site. Site pricing starts at $60 for 2 users, and reduces steadily as you add more. Buy yourself a cyn.in site, today.

That's what Jerry Bowles felt after collaborating on cyn.in for a week with his colleagues. Jerry has reviewed cyn.in on his blog Enterpriseweb2.com and in a very explicitly has explained the simplicity and concept of cyn.in. These were by far the most encouraging words that I have read about cyn.in.The honor is truly ours, to accept your accolades. cyn.in is the most promising offering we have ever had, because apart from inheriting a rocket science technology base from all our previous work, It has been designed to very simply communicate with its customers. We have spent 5 years building cyn.in to give our customers 'the perspective of a smooth ride.'. Thanks for the excellent review, Jerry!

And I get to flag it off on behalf of the Cynapse team. Today we present our magnum opus to the world. cyn.in is now open to everyone.

It feels like it has been eons since we have been planning, building and re-ideating mechanisms to help people manage and collaborate on information. Five and a half years of extensive research and product building has given us the knowledge and insights that no text book or report could have. We have been testing cyn.in undercover for nearly a year now, with select few organizations and teams. Unlike current trends, we decided against a public beta, as we believe enterprises can not risk their information with beta software. We received an overwhelmingly positive response during our week long exclusive preview to market experts and bloggers.

cyn.in is truly revolutionary in every aspect that I can think of. From its use of some seriously advanced technology, to its rock solid delivery model, every small piece of cyn.in has been carefully and precisely designed. Our decision to adopt the ‘Software as a Service’ business model has enabled us to offer the most flexible pricing model ever offered by any enterprise software to date. Now small and mid sized companies can affordably benefit from otherwise unaffordable, advanced enterprise technology and infrastructure.

cyn.in is one big step towards Cynapse’s promise of ‘Evolving you’ and will evolve enterprise collaboration, productivity and information management to a whole new level.
